Designing with a Purpose: Architecture Students Propose Acoustic Solutions for AUC Library

The AUC Library is filled with pages of information, nooks to work in, and a number of gadgets and resources to help students and faculty in their research and other tasks. But, one aspect where the library still struggles is reducing the noise level in its Learning Commons – the open area you see when you first walk into the library.

For Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub, science and creativity go hand in hand. In fact, creativity fosters science and vice versa. “Science and medicine offer unprecedented opportunities for discovery and, most importantly, alleviating human suffering, … and creativity and innovation … [are] essential for achieving any target in research," Yacoub affirmed in his speech titled “Creativity: An Illusive Target" at AUC's 2018 Research and Creativity Convention.

AUC Promotes Education for Sustainable Development in Egyptian Schools

In the midst of growing movements toward educational change in Egypt, AUC’s Center for Sustainable Development has launched a project, titled School of 2030: Education for Sustainable Development in Boulaq El Dakrour – EduCamp III. The project’s main objective is to transform education in Egypt by building schools in areas of informal settlement that meet the goals of the country’s larger sustainable development strategy, known as Egypt Vision 2030.

EduCamp Project Integrates Sustainability in Egyptian Public Schools

Ending a three-year pilot project to introduce sustainability concepts in Egyptian public schools, AUC’s Center for Sustainable Development (CSD), in cooperation with the Education for Sustainable Development Beyond the Campus (EduCamp) consortium, handed over Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) school kits to the Ministry of Education for implementation in public schools across the country.

Sustainable Development Graduate Program Provides New Perspectives

AUC recently launched a graduate program in sustainable development, which welcomed 24 new students. President Lisa Anderson, Provost Amr Shaarawi and deans and faculty members from all participating schools celebrated the launch in an event where students emphasized the importance of the program, which is the first-of-its-kind in the region and one of few in the world.

Undergrads Design Nanoscale Devices for Biomedical, Computing Purposes

Abdulilah Azzazi, a physics undergraduate with a minor in computer science, has designed novel nano-scale devices for optical interconnections, allowing light to communicate between chips and cores on computer motherboards, increasing speed and reducing cost. One of the smallest devices ever designed, at 500 by 500 nanometers, the design will be sent to a Japanese university for fabrication and will be returned to Egypt for testing.
