Physics Alum Receives MIT Teaching Excellence Award After One Year as Postdoc

One year ago, Mohamed Abdelhafez '11 started working as a postdoctoral associate in physics education technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Today, he has received the 2020 MIT Graduate Student Council Teaching Award has become a full-time lecturer in physics after an overwhelming nomination by students.

AUC Team Wins Second Place in Shell: Imagine the Future Competition

An AUC team won second place in Egypt in the Shell: Imagine the Future competition, competing with 129 teams from around the country. Held by the leading energy company Shell, the competition has student teams competing locally then globally to imagine scenarios on how the world will look like by 2050. This kind of non-linear futuristic thinking aims to encourage different organizations to stay on top of the world's changing landscape.

AUC's Society of Petroleum Engineers Receives International Student Excellence Award

AUC's Society of Petroleum Engineers received the Student Chapter Excellence Award for "accomplishing an admirable level of success." "Representing AUC was an honor," said Ahmed Negm '20, petroleum engineering graduate who served as marketing director and crisis manager of the Society of Petroleum Engineers. "We had aimed to achieve this award through planning, seeking challenges and constantly working on improving ourselves. We hope to always keep making AUC proud."

The Electronic Design Automation (EDA) research group at AUC and Brown University's Scale Computing Lab have developed a cloud-based, digital hardware design environment called Cloud V to utilize open-source academic materials and freely available EDA tools using standard and familiar web interfaces.

AUC will be providing voluntary mentorship support for entrepreneurs as part of the Gemini Uplift initiative to support entrepreneurs during the COVID-19 pandemic. The initiative, launched by Gemini Enterprises Africa, aims to revive the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Egypt and Africa during these difficult times through money, matchmaking and mentorship. Gemini focuses on supporting entrepreneurship in Africa, and particularly projects focused on social dimensions.

The Race to Recycle Lithium-Ion Batteries

Li-ion batteries are used in cell phones, tablets, laptops, cameras, and other electronic devices. And while nearly 90% of batteries worldwide are recycled, there still lacks a universal standard for recycling these specific batteries, as they can be dangerous if not handled correctly. Nageh Allam, professor of physics, and a team of graduate students in AUC's nanotechnology program are working to solve this.

Workplaces are being disrupted to an unprecedented degree, and nobody knows how long this will last. Many of us have to work from home, and this in itself can be not only challenging, but also isolating and lonely.
