Alum, Faculty Laila Ziko Wins Innovators Under 35 MENA Award for Using Microbes to Cure Diseases

Laila Ziko (MSc '13, PhD '19), adjunct professor of biology, is one of the winners of the Innovators Under 35 MENA award, presented by MIT Technology Review Arabia and the Dubai Future Foundation. Her research focuses on using microbes to cure diseases, bypassing antibiotic resistance and cancer chemotherapeutic resistance.

Madina Mahmoud '12, '18 Receives Prestigious Award from Italy for 'A New Future for Water' Research

Congratulations to Madina Mahmoud '12, '18 for receiving the 2019 Eni Young African Talents Award for her research on "a new future for water" — in energy, sustainability and environmental protection solutions. The award offers a PhD scholarship, with which she will complete her studies at an Italian university or research institute.

Using the 'Power of Design' to Shape the Future of Architecture and Autism

In 2002, Magda Mostafa, associate professor in the Department of Architecture, was approached by a group of parents to design Egypt’s first educational center for autism. She was eager to get to work, certain it would be easy with all the guidelines and research she’d find on how to design for individuals with autism. But to her surprise, she found “absolutely nothing.” No architect, she said, in Egypt or anywhere around the world had ever looked through and structured evidence-based methodology into this topic.

Graduate Student Publishes Paper on Effects of Radiotherapy on Gut Microbiome in Cancer Patients

A team from the American University in Cairo, Zewail City, and Children Cancer Hospital (57375) has published a paper on the effect of radiotherapy on the gut microbiome in pediatric cancer patients. Nourhan Sahly, AUC Biotechnology graduate student, is the lead author on the paper. Sahly conducted her Master's thesis under the supervision of Ahmed Moustafa, associate professor in the Department of Biology and the Biotechnology Graduate Program, Tamer Salem from Zewail City of Science and Technology, and Dr. Mohamed Zaghloul from the Children’s Cancer Hospital.

Nanotechnology PhD Student Uses Silkworms to Store, Transmit Energy in Fabrics

When Basant Ali, a PhD candidate in AUC's nanotechnology program, proposed an unusual research idea, her friends and professors told her she was crazy. However, a few months after her proposition, Ali’s “crazy” idea turned into a months-long research project and was soon published in Scientific Reports, a branch of the world’s leading multidisciplinary scientific journal, Nature.
