Capacity Building Center

The Center for Capacity Building offers many courses geared towards clients and owners of construction projects and mega construction projects. In addition, TheCenter for Capacity Building offered courses to governmental organizations and institutional clients. One of our main objectives is to enhance the capabilities of governmental organizations such as water and sanitation companies and electrical utility companies.

1.    Construction Project Management Track

   A. Time management and scheduling. Some of the topics covered include:

  • WBS types and concepts
  • Characteristics of WBS from the WSCs perspective
  • Best practices for building WBSs for clients
  • Building data concepts based on ISO 120006
  • UNiformatOmniFormat, and Uniclass
  • Integration of classification systems in project planning
  • Activity coding
  • What are client schedule requirements?
  • Classification of client schedule requirements
  • Sample of client schedule requirements: UFGS rules
  • Systems to monitor compliance

   B. Cost management and cash flow. Some of the topics covered include:

  • (Comprehension Level) relate quantities from invoking, BOQ and actual and the percent complete methods
  • (Application Level) calculate percent complete using different methods
  • (Application Level) relate financial aspects of the invoice with the prepayments, advance payments, taxes and social insurance and contract terms cash flow 1 session
  • (Application Level) calculate cash flow for the project
  • (Application Level) discover financial gaps in the project and solve them financially from the owner's perspective
  • (Analysis Level) analyze the cash flow in terms of the time value of money
  • (Application Level) calculate sample items using 2 different methods of measurements
  • (Knowledge Level) define a method of measurement
  • (Knowledge Level) list at least three different methods of measurement
  • (Analysis Level) compare MOM with regard to their applicability in prospective projects and the Egyptian market

 

  C.   Risk and Control. Some of the topics covered include:

  • Schedule risk analysis, measures and drivers
  • Prioritizing tasks
  • Probabilistic branching
  • Schedule contingency
  • Updating and documenting a scheduling risk
  • (Knowledge Level) define earned value metrics for the project
  • (Application Level) calculate earned value metrics for the project
  • (Evaluation Level) assess the impact of earned value metrics on project time and cost
  • (Evaluation Level) decide on corrective actions to deal with the deviations in the plan using earned value metrics

 

   D.   Safety Management. This section is based on IOSH Managing Safely curriculum. Some of the topics covered include:

  • Ensures you can assess and control risks and hazards
  • Ensures you understand your own responsibilities for safety and health
  • Enables you to investigate incidents
  • Empowers you to measure your own performance
  • Allows for personal reflections on good practice

 

2.    Procurement and Contracts Track

   A. Basic of Procurement. Some of the topics covered include:

  • Describe the requirements for a successful procurement cycle for goods and services prior to procuring from outside suppliers
  • Recognize the procurement thresholds and methods used for procuring materials and services
  • Follow the procurement cycle and what’s involved in the process
  • Interpret procurement terms

 

B. Standard Bidding Documents for services and products. This course is based on the SBD for the World Bank and African Bank. Some of the topics covered include:\

  • Bidding procedures
  • Instructions to bidders (itb)
  • Bid data sheet (bds)
  • Evaluation and qualification criteria
  • Bidding forms
  • Eligible countries
  • Bank policy – corrupt and fraudulent practices
  • Supply requirements
  • Conditions of contract and contract forms
  • General conditions of contract
  • Special conditions of contract

 

C. Contract Management and Claims. Some of the topics covered include:

  • Introduction to Contract Management
  • Types of Claims
  • Handling Claims
  • Claims and the contract
  • Case studies and the Law

 

D. Introduction to FIDIC documents. This is a beginners course so no previous knowledge or practical experience in the use of FIDIC contracts, some of the topics covered include:

  •  Introduction to FIDIC concepts
  •  Definitions related to FIDIC

Costs: Cost per participant is $1000 with a minimum of 20 participants. The courses offer a combination of face to face as well as synchronous and asynchronous online learning through the University Moodle system.
