The Department of Petroleum and Energy Engineering encourages students to participate in professional and honor societies in the field.

A student chapter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and the Petroleum and Energy Engineering Club (PEEC) has been established to serve the students of the department and to encourage them to participate in activities that will enhance their practical skills and serve their needs in the petroleum and energy engineering discipline.

PENG Highlights

Two students from the petroleum and energy engineering department partook in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Society of Petroleum Engineers Student Paper Contest and won second and third places. The contest involves students from different petroleum engineering departments all across the MENA region. The students present their research results in front of a highly technical panel of judges. They are then asked questions on their research, and are given a score based on their presentation, research results, and ability to answer questions.

Youssef Helmy, a master of science student in the petroleum and energy engineering department, presented his research titled “Development of a High Durability Single Binder Low Cost Alkaline Activated Cement,” which aims to utilize a low-cost solid waste material for cementing. He ranked second place in the MENA region in the contest. His work was supervised by Sherif Fakher, assistant professor in the petroleum and energy engineering department.

Maryam Ali, an undergraduate student in the petroleum and energy engineering department, also presented her research in the undergraduate division of the contest. Her research, titled “Asphaltene Damage Mitigation Using Unconventional Chemical Agents: An Experimental Investigation”, studies the factors that can result in asphaltene instability, which can severely reduce oil recovery, and then utilizes different chemical agents to treat asphaltene problems. She ranked third place in the MENA region in the contest. Sherif Fakher also supervised her work.
